Also known as “London on Sea,” take a flight to Brighton and discover the coolest seaside destination on the South Coast. Popular since Regency times, Brighton’s architecture is particularly appealing, with winding streets (known as “the lanes”), packed full of trendy, arty and eclectic shops and cafés that lead down to the seafront. The hub of the town is Palace Pier, the seafront and its famous pebbled beach.
The Brighton Pavilion is an impressive affair; it looks like it belongs in a Far Eastern fairy-tale. It was built by the Prince Regent in 1815, in the style of the Taj Mahal. Visitors can tour the building to see its interiors and gardens.
The liberal attitude that the Prince Regent brought to Brighton lives on today. It is known as the “gay capital” of the UK and the area of Kemptown (along King’s Cliff to Black Rock) is full of bars and clubs that fly the rainbow-coloured flag.
Those visiting Brighton will usually take a flight to London Gatwick Airport(LGW), located 28 miles (42 km) from Brighton, it is the closet airport to the city. It’s approximately a 50-minute drive away or you can travel on the Gatwick Express from inside the airport but expect to make changes to different trains along your journey.
